One eye sees worse than the other: what to do?

Pathology, in which one eye sees worse than the other, is called amblyopia. An abnormality develops due to dysfunction of the visual analyzer, i.e. violation of the relationship of the brain with organs of sight.

 One eye sees worse than the other.

The reasons

Amblyopia is a pathology that can be eliminated. However, first of all it is necessary to find out the reasons why it arose. These may include:

  1. Temporal arteritis. Accompanied by compression of the optic nerve by the artery, with the result that the eye perceives visual information worse. This violation is dangerous because it can lead to a complete loss of vision.
  2. Carotid stenosis (typical for elderly patients). The basis of the pathology is a violation of blood circulation in the organ of vision.
  3. Optical neuropathy (the primary cause may be high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, vascular atherosclerosis). With optical neuropathy, pain does not occur. There may be precursors of the disease, manifested by a temporary impairment of visual function.
  4. Retrobulbar neuritis. The inflammatory process, which is characterized by rapid development. Accompanied by severe pains and "flicker" in the eyes. It does not lead to complete loss of vision.

Provoking factors

Factors that increase the risk of developing amblyopia include:

  • strabismus;
  • heredity;
  • circulatory disorders;
  • nerve compression;
  • eye injury;
  • traumatic brain injury;
  • high blood pressure;
  • born pathologies of organs of vision;
  • eye diseases of infectious nature.

Types of amblyopia

  1. Refractive. It occurs on the background of strabismus, myopia. It is a consequence of the systematic formation of fuzzy images on the retina. May develop as a consequence of not wearing corrective glasses.
  2. Dysbinocular Often develops in the background of strabismus.
  3. Obscuration The cause is genetic disorders. This form can be inherited.
  4. Anisometropic. Pathology develops gradually, if 1 eye sees worse than the other by several diopters.

Amblyopia treatment

Contact a specialist should be the first symptoms. Treatment of amblyopia is primarily focused on eliminating the cause of the disorder, enhancing the visual function of a weak eye and achieving a good level of vision in both eyes.

The specialist can prescribe wearing glasses or corrective contact lenses. Treatment can also be performed surgically. The operation is relevant in cases of strabismus or cataracts.

To restore the visual functions of a weak eye, special visual exercises are used. They are most effective when used at an early age. It is also sometimes closed one eye with good vision, in order to activate the possibilities of the weaker. To do this, use bandages and every day for a few hours or for the whole day cover the healthy eye. Use this method for several weeks, months.

There are special tools that can be used in such cases. For example, a doctor may prescribe the wearing of opaque contact lenses or instillation of atropine into a healthy eye — drops that will cause a blurred image in it.

Other reasons why one eye sees worse than the other.

Visual impairment on the part of one eye may occur due to:

  1. Conjunctivitis. This is one of the most common infections found in children and adults. The inflammatory process usually affects one eye, but in the absence of hygiene and proper care, it can spread to the second. Characteristic signs are swelling, tearing, pain in the eye, blurred vision. In the process of treatment using special drops, often from the category of antibacterial drugs. Self-treatment is prohibited, as it can lead to serious complications.
  2. Herpes infection. The lesion is observed on the cornea of the eye. Cases of the disease are more often recorded in the autumn-winter period. The onset of the disease is due to a decrease in immunity and a lack of vitamins.The treatment is aimed at suppressing the activity of the virus.
  3. Cataracts. The cause of the disease is retinal detachment. The inflammatory process leads to visual impairment and pain. Restoration of impaired function in this case is possible only by performing a surgical operation, during which the affected lens is replaced with a new one.
  4. Barley. Characteristic signs of its formation is compaction, hyperemia. A small abscess begins to form, which bursts after 5-7 days. It is advisable to consult a doctor at the first symptoms, as the treatment started at an early stage can stop the development of inflammation.
  5. Glaucoma. On the development of glaucoma may indicate sharp pain in the eye, eye flushing, the appearance of "veil". Nausea and vomiting may occur. The occurrence of such symptoms should be a reason for seeking medical attention.

The reason for which vision is reduced in one eye can lurk in the cervical osteochondrosis. Pathology leads to compression of the aorta, passing through the spinal column and providing the optic nerve with full circulation.

To avoid deterioration, experts advise to adhere to the following recommendations:

  • perform gymnastics for the eyes;
  • take a douche (wash first with hot, then with cold water);
  • use artificial tears to moisturize the eyes;
  • make compresses with parsley juice or black tea;
  • use hypoallergenic and natural cosmetics;
  • perform a light eye massage (pats, strokes, contributing to the improvement of blood circulation).
